Cold compress to reduce swelling

Following dental procedures, you may experience swelling of the mouth, cheek or face. To reduce this swelling, apply a cold compress to your face in the area affected by the treatment. Use the compress for half an hour, then put it back in the freezer for half an hour, and repeat as necessary. Try to keep this routine up for at least four hours.

Implants are nearly always placed under local anaesthetic. The incision that is made in the jaw is stitched shut with fine stitches. Following the procedure, do not use your toothbrush to clean the treated area. Your specialist will tell you when you can brush in this area again. For the first few hours after the procedure, you must not rinse out your mouth, as this can cause bleeding. Furthermore, try to avoid food or drink for as long as possible after the procedure. One day after the procedure, you can start to rinse your mouth with the mouthwash provided.

The success percentage of implants is higher for non-smokers than for smokers. Excessive use of alcohol can also negatively affect the success of implants. Smoking hinders the ability of the wound to heal. We therefore strongly advise against smoking, particularly during the healing process.

Food & drink

It is advisable to avoid food and drink for the first few hours after the operation. For the first few days, you must be careful with solid food. Use a blender to break up your food and remove crusts from bread. Be careful with hot drinks, especially if the anaesthetic has not yet worn off completely.
