Conditions for a successful procedure
There are a number of essential conditions that patients must meet in order for dental implants to be successfully placed
- You must be in good health.
- You must have healthy gums.
- You must be prepared to thoroughly clean the implants and the construction attached to them.
- There must be enough bone in the jaw to anchor the implant.
- The bone in the jaw must be of good quality.
If the bone density is insufficient for placement of an implant, then a number of things can be done to improve the bone and prepare it for successful implantation. Dental implants can be placed once the bone has been fully improved. For patients of around 18 years, careful attention must be paid during the growth process. Aside from this age restriction, implants can be the optimal solution for all age groups.
Alcohol and tobacco
The success percentage of implants is higher for non-smokers than for smokers. Excessive use of alcohol can also negatively affect the success of implants.
Diagnosis, advice and planning
Only the specialist can tell you if your personal situation complies with the conditions for successful treatment. The dentist can advise you following an examination. If the dentist/specialist gives the go-ahead, then your dentist or dental surgeon will discuss the treatment plan and procedure with you and answer any questions you may have. During the first consultation, so many matters are discussed that patients may forget to ask certain questions they may have. If this is the case, write down these questions when you think of them so that you can be sure you will remember them for your next appointment.
